Inside Improvisation Series: Vol 1: Melodic structures
By Jerry Bergonzi

Jerry Bergonzi is a well known teacher in the Boston area, and also a world renown jazz saxophonist. I've seen him play many times, and also had the chance to study with some of his students as well. What I love about this series is that just about anyone at any improv level can assimilate the ideas that he presents in these books.

The first in the series deals primarily with tetratonic structure soloing. What that means is playing permutations of 4 notes on chords. Anyone who has ever studied the solo on "Giant Steps" by John Coltrane would be familiar with this technique. When you're playing on a tune with dense chord changes and fast harmonic rhythms...this system of improvisation is really helpful. The book comes complete with a play along cd with chord changes based on well known standards...and each tune is recorded at 2 different tempos.
