The Koln Concert - Keith Jarrett

This is an album that is comprised of solo piano and what is remarkable about it, is that each piece was entirely improvised. What's even more remarkable is that it was recorded live. There are few musicians who are capable of composing and playing with such control, imagination, and fluidity of thought as Keith Jarrett. There are even fewer musicians who would risk putting themselves on the line in front of a large audience while playing in this manner. Keith is regarded as being one of the best jazz piano players of all time..not just by this album...but all through his career from the time he started playing with Miles Davis, and also his solo projects in a jazz trio or quartet setting.

Though you would have to go looking for this record in the jazz section of a record store...I really have a hard time calling this jazz music...at least mainstream jazz. It just seems to transcend all stylistic boundaries...there are folk and pop sensibilities about it, yet the complexity of the harmonies and counterpoint Keith uses come more from the classical and jazz traditions. This is another album which I really think almost anyone can enjoy.
